Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural compound that has various health and beauty benefits. It is non-addictive and is a highly effective anti-inflammatory that works to relieve aches, pain, sleeplessness and numerous other ailments. There are a few ways to take CBD, each of which produces different results and lasts different lengths of time.

There is no definitive answer to the question ‘how long does CBD stay in my system’. It depends on the method of consumption and what concentration of CBD you take. It also depends on how your body metabolizes and excretes the compound. However, there are ways to estimate how long CBD will stay in your body.

CBD is metabolized within a week

Recent research shows that CBD is metabolized and excreted within seven days of consumption unless you are a frequent consumer who takes more than 10mg per day. In these cases, CBD may remain in the body for up to three weeks. In most cases, however, CBD is undetected in the body after about a week.

It comes down to the half-life of CBD – the length of time it takes for 50% of the dosage to leave the body. Half-life is a common measurement for pharmaceutical products and it is used to determine how fast medications are metabolized and excreted. The half-life of CBD is between two and five days, depending on the regularity of use.

The half-life of 10mg of CBD is around three hours, which means that after three hours, there will only be 5mg left in the body. After six hours, there will be 2.5mg remaining, and so on. This half-life can change depending on the method of consumption; for example, CBD oil has a longer half-life than topical ointments.

The regularity of use also affects the way the body processes CBD. Long-term users will find that CBD remains in the body for longer periods of time. The following table shows the estimated CBD concentrations after a 10mg dose:

Time after doseSingle doseLong-term use
3 hours5mg10mg
1 day0.3mg8mg
3 days0mg5mg
7 days0mg2.3mg

As we can see, single-dose usage is metabolized faster than regular usage. These times are estimates and the actual results can vary from person to person, but they do offer a guideline to half-life and the metabolization of the natural compound.

How the body processes CBD

The body processes CBD according to the way it is taken. Oral consumption (eating gummies) leads to a different process than sublingual or topical applications. If we ingest CBD by swallowing it, around 18% actually ends up in the bloodstream after being digested and processed by the gut and liver.

To increase this percentage, consumers should take CBD straight after a high-fat meal. This is because cannabidiol is a highly lipophilic compound that is better able to dissolve when combined with lipids or fats. The absorbed fats in the small intestine can carry the CBD straight through the lymphatic system and into the bloodstream, bypassing the liver.

Sublingual consumption has a higher absorption rate. By placing oil under the tongue, it is transferred into the bloodstream via the mucous membranes and blood vessels in the mouth. This means that more CBD ends up in the bloodstream as the liver and digestive system is bypassed.

Topical applications, such as creams and lotions on the skin, have a more localised effect on the body. These methods work well for muscle aches, joint pains and ailments associated with arthritis. The CBD in these creams never actually reaches the bloodstream but it does act as an anti-inflammatory agent on the skin and subdermal tissues.

It is impossible to overdose on CBD as any excess is processed by the kidneys and excreted through urine. It is, however, important to try to find the right dosage for your body type and personal needs. This will make your CBD products last longer and will help you to save money in the long run.
